Our Cows
Our rules of supply require that all cows in each herd are pedigree and not crossed with other breeds or cross-bred cattle.
Although Jersey Cows are tagged, as they are in the UK, every cow and bull traces its immediate pedigree through its name – for example the world famous Golden Fern’s Noble. Every Jersey Cow in Jersey can be traced back to the 7th entry in the first Jersey Herd Book of 1866, a cow called Sultane.
Trophies are awarded annually to those producers who have supplied the highest quality milk to the Dairy within the accounting year. The quality standards of every milk producer are published in the annual accounts. Milk producers take great pride in their cattle: two major cattle shows are organised annually by the breed society, the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society, which attract widespread Island interest; competition is fierce for the wide array of trophies with perhaps the most prestigious being the trophy for the supreme champion at the Spring Show which was presented by the late King George V.
No dairy farms in Jersey keep their herds in doors throughout the year. In the summer they go out to pasture and in the winter they have access to a yard with many herds still having access to pasture.
